PS3 as a DLNA Player

The PS3 has the capability to play movies and other media. Video (and other media)can be played from the following sources:
  • the internal PS3 hard drive
  • USB drive
  • internet via a DLNA server
This seemingly simple process gets very complicated when you consider the following factors. The media type being played and the method of distribution (DLNA server being the more complicated approach).

Media
The PS3 natively supports:
from: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html
The following types of files can be played under (Video).
  • Memory Stick Video Format
  • - MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
  • - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
  • - MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
  • MP4 file format
  • - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
  • MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
  • MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
  • MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)
  • MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
  • AVI
  • - Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
  • - Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
  • AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
  • DivX
  • WMV
  • - VC-1(WMA Standard V2)
There is a note some place that Xvid and DivX do not need to be transcoded, need to test this to confirm if others will play natively.
Question: Are the above video formats valid for all sources (internal, external, media server)

Video Source
Internal Drive
ddddd

USB Drive
A reader has tipped us to the fact that placing the videos in a folder called "VIDEO" on the USB drive makes them appear in the Video menu without using "Display All". This also works for photos ("PHOTO" directory) and music ("MUSIC" directory).

ffdshow
is a media decoder and encoder mainly used for the fast and high-quality decoding of video in the MPEG-4 ASP (e.g. encoded with DivX, Xvid or FFmpeg MPEG-4) and AVC (H.264) formats, but supporting numerous other video and audio formats as well. It is free software released under the GPL license, runs on Windows and is implemented as a DirectShow and VFW decoding filter.

DivX is proprietary and Xvid is open source and usable on more operating systems.
